Can't say I agree with the scientific theory thing. It takes many scientists many years to accumulate enough data to validate a theory, and even then it's tentative. Other scientists can figure out better ways to explain the facts.
Obviously, a scientist will be reluctant to change his mind if he's been working on a particular theory his whole life.
The thing with facts, though, is that they don't change depending on whether or not you believe in them.
